Vinegaroons (Uropygi: Mastigoproctus tohono) in a multi-predator/multi-prey system: Prey, predators, and cannibalism

چکیده
Vinegaroons are members of a guild apex arthropod predators in the high desert grasslands southeastern Arizona. Despite their importance as major ecosystem, almost nothing is known about potential prey, predators, or competitors. We evaluated predator-prey relationships vinegaroons and 30 species 27 detailed interactions among three taxa predator guild. With few exceptions, overpowered preyed on most prey within suitable size range, were immune to predation, appeared be dominant with other members. Their vulnerable life stages first two free-living instar stages, whereas adults fourth individuals not by any active same areas times vinegaroons. Third crucial transition stage which they had but also large enough that required capturing many items grow sufficiently molt instar. In general observation was when predation occurred, larger individual usually prevailed irrespective taxon. Cannibalism adult does occur under natural conditions contrast placed together artificial stressful situations. smallest instars appears likely might partially explain why solitary spend minimal time foraging.

Destabilizing effect of cannibalism on a structured predator-prey system.
The dynamics of a predator-prey system, where the predator has two stages, a juvenile stage and a mature stage, are modelled by a system of three ordinary differential equations. The mature predators prey on the juvenile predators in addition to the prey. If the mortality rate of juveniles is low and/or the recruitment rate to the mature population is high, then there is a stable equilibrium wi...

That predators attack and prey defend is an oversimplified view. When size changes during development, large prey may be invulnerable to predators, and small juvenile predators vulnerable to attack by prey. This in turn may trigger a defensive response in adult predators to protect their offspring. Indeed, when sizes overlap, one may wonder "who is the predator and who is the prey"! Experiments...

Trophic cascades are often a potent force in ecological communities, but abiotic and biotic heterogeneity can diffuse their influence. For example, inducible defenses in many species create variation in prey edibility, and size-structured interactions, such as cannibalism, can shift predator diets away from heterospecific prey. Although both factors diffuse cascade strength by adding heterogene...
متن کاملDangerous prey and daring predators: a review.
How foragers balance risks during foraging is a central focus of optimal foraging studies. While diverse theoretical and empirical work has revealed how foragers should and do manage food and safety from predators, little attention has been given to the risks posed by dangerous prey. This is a potentially important oversight because risk of injury can give rise to foraging costs similar to thos...
متن کاملPredators choose prey over prey habitats: evidence from a lynx-hare system.
Resource selection is grounded in the understanding that animals select resources based on fitness requirements. Despite uncertainty in how mechanisms relate to the landscape, resource selection studies often assume, but rarely demonstrate, a relationship between modeled variables and fitness mechanisms. Using Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) and snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) as a model system,...
